Alan Lamb
Alan’s background is in Human Resources and he is a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Some of his former roles include being a senior manager with Sefton Education Business Partnership, Work Experience Co-ordinator and Out of School Hours Learning Co-ordinator. He has an active interest in helping young people achieve their full potential. In a previous life he was a Youth Leader and it was during this period he attended courses on Counselling and started looking at different ways of communicating with young people.
During his time as Work Experience Co-ordinator he mentored a number of Year 11 students on a voluntary basis over a 5-year period. From the feedback received from the students he worked with this was a rewarding and successful venture for all concerned, and was the catalyst for him taking a keener interest in personal development. Alan successfully undertook a course in Motivational Interviewing and began a new career as a Life Coach in 2005, studying with Rivas Palmer, a private training organisation. Since then Alan has combined Life Coaching with his role as a Learning Mentor and Aimhigher Coordinator at a High School in Sefton. Alan’s interest in self improvement has been further enhanced through training with the Pacific Institute on their Investment in Excellence Programme.
Alan has been an active governor of a local secondary school for over a decade in which the school has gone from strength to strength, culminating in the Headteacher being awarded the accolade of Headteacher of the Year in the Northwest in 2009.
Recently Alan has been coaching a group of students away from the traditional school environment, as well as working with a number of professionals from the retail industry, both receiving very favourable feedback. As Alan states himself his work is extremely rewarding “If I can work with people and help motivate them to move forward with their lives, then that’s as good as it gets.”
What students on MALIT courses have said about Alan
Andy, Student: Alan helped me with some issues I was having with my lack of motivation to study. I’ve now got into university and things are going really well!
Ricky, former Student: I had to pass my exams in order to get on my apprenticeship and it wasn’t looking promising! I had a lot of problems with teachers and some of the other students, but with Alan’s help (and patience!) I passed my exams and am doing well in my new job. I’ve even passed some more exams since I’ve started.
Charlotte, Student: Alan is easily the most positive person I’ve ever met in my life! He helped me see things from a different perspective, and when I have a problem now I say to myself ‘What would Alan ask me now?’
Joanne, Student Teacher: I was struggling wih a lack of confidence with some older students. After speaking with Alan for one session, I had the best lesson I’d ever had! Things have continued to improve since, and I can’t recommend Alan highly enough!
